Six product ad formats that already sell, with shot timings.
We took 26 finished ecommerce ads that are running right now, detected every cut, and rebuilt the skeleton behind them. Each format below gives you the beat timing, the shot count, what the camera is allowed to do, the evidence your product needs — and a prompt you can paste.
Open on the frustration, not the product. The product arrives only after the viewer recognises the problem as their own.
Problem42%
One person, one gesture, one burned-in caption. The product is not in frame yet.
Product38%
Product enters the same framing. Same person, same room, no scene change.
Resolve20%
Calmer expression, product still legible. Offer and CTA go on the layout layer.
Use it when
Supplement
Skincare
Eyewear
Any product with one nameable daily frustration
Evidence it needs
A licensed on-model or presenter reference, the primary product image, and one verified benefit you are allowed to say out loud.
Where it breaks
Do not stage a medical or guaranteed outcome, do not put a number on the result, and do not let the product change shape between the problem and the answer.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 testimonial ad using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. Shot 1 (0-[T1]s): tight mid-close, handheld selfie framing, one person alone in a real room, registering a specific physical frustration in face and posture — no product in frame. Shot 2 ([T1]-[T2]s): identical framing and lighting, the product now held beside the face, label readable, the same person speaking to camera. Shot 3 ([T2]-end): relaxed expression, product centred and steady, a held frame that can carry an end card. Keep one primary movement per shot, natural available light, no cut to a different room. Preserve the submitted product's shape, colour, proportions and packaging exactly. Do not generate readable text, prices, guarantees, medical outcomes or before-and-after results; captions and offer copy are added in layout.
Sell the material. No people, no voiceover, no plot — one surface lit so well it does the arguing.
Macro in22%
Start on the surface, not the whole product. Slow push, shallow depth of field.
Hero33%
Three-quarter hero angle, rim light separating the silhouette from the backdrop.
Detail cut27%
One hard cut to the single detail that carries the price point.
Hold18%
Centred, stable, thumbnail-ready. Room at the bottom for a caption.
Use it when
Beverage
Confectionery
Fragrance
Eyewear
Any product where finish is the reason to buy
Evidence it needs
The primary product image plus one close-up that proves the surface, texture or component actually looks like that.
Where it breaks
Do not invent reflective finishes, condensation, engraving or component detail that the reference does not show.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 cinematic product film using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. No people, no voiceover. Shot 1: macro push-in on the product surface against a seamless warm backdrop, shallow depth of field, one soft key from camera left and a hard accent from behind right. Shot 2: cut to a three-quarter hero angle, full product, rim light separating the silhouette, still air. Shot 3: one hard cut to the single component or finish detail that justifies the price. Shot 4: return to the centred hero frame and hold, leaving clean space at the bottom of frame for a caption added later. Keep the palette inside two tones, deep falloff, one primary camera move per shot. Preserve shape, colour, proportions and materials exactly; do not invent reflections, condensation, engraving or parts. Do not generate readable text, logos, prices or end-card copy.
Earn the beauty shot first, then prove the thing is actually used by someone who is not an actor.
Empty30%
Product alone, backlit, raking light, dust visible. Establish material before anything happens.
Intrusion30%
Pet or hand enters and uses it naturally. Camera locked, no directing.
Texture22%
Macro of the weave, grain or coating while it is in use.
Settle18%
Wide hold, the subject settled, brand visible only where it physically exists.
Use it when
Pet
Home
Furniture
Food
Anything whose value only appears once it is in use
Evidence it needs
Primary product image, a texture close-up, and one approved real-use reference (pet, room, hand or surface).
Where it breaks
Do not direct the animal or person into an action they cannot actually perform, and do not move the product between shots without showing it.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 product film using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. Shot 1: the product alone as a still life, early sunlight raking across it from behind, dust in the air, shallow depth of field, camera static. Shot 2: a pet or a hand enters frame and uses the product naturally, camera stays locked, no staged performance. Shot 3: macro of the surface texture while the product is in use. Shot 4: pull to a wide hold, the subject settled in place, warm neutral palette. Keep the product in the same position and state throughout except for the natural use moment. Preserve shape, colour, proportions and materials exactly. Do not invent logged surfaces, packaging or claims; do not generate readable text or prices.
Give the clean product shot first, then answer the only question a clean shot cannot answer: how big is it, and how is it worn.
Cyc35%
Pure white, slow rotation, high key. Let the surface flare.
Detail25%
Tighter crop on the one detail that sells it: clasp, heel, stitch, print.
Context40%
Worn or placed, wide enough to read scale. This is the shot that answers 'how big'.
Use it when
Fashion
Footwear
Jewellery
Toys
Accessories
Any SKU that needs scale
Evidence it needs
A clean cut-out or white-background product image, one detail close-up, and an approved on-body or in-context reference.
Where it breaks
Do not fabricate colourways by recolouring one image, and do not let the product change proportions when it moves onto a body.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 product video using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. Shot 1: pure white cyclorama, product centred on a slow rotating turntable, high-key lighting, no shadow clutter. Shot 2: tighter crop on the single detail that carries the sale — clasp, heel, stitching or print. Shot 3: the product worn, held or placed by a person or in a real setting, framed wide enough that relative scale is unambiguous. Keep white balance neutral in shots 1-2 and let the context shot carry the warmer room light. Preserve shape, colour, proportions and construction exactly across the cut from product-only to in-context. Do not recolour the product, add variants, or generate readable text, size labels or prices.
Start mid-action, not on a title card. The unboxing is the proof that this is a real purchase, not a render.
Mid-action15%
Hands already opening the box, product half out. No establishing shot.
Try-on25%
Turn the head or hand so the light catches the finish, then the other side.
Detail25%
Macro of the finish or closure. This is the credibility shot.
Second variant20%
Cut to a referenced colourway only. Same framing, same light.
Ask15%
Direct to camera. A question that invites a comment beats a CTA button.
Use it when
Eyewear
Accessories
Footwear
New arrivals with several colourways
Evidence it needs
Licensed presenter or hand reference, the primary product image, and separate references for every colourway you intend to show.
Where it breaks
Do not show a colourway you cannot reference, and do not invent packaging, included accessories or a price.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 try-on ad using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. Shot 1: begin mid-action — hands already opening the packaging, product half out of the box, no title card or establishing shot. Shot 2: on the body, turn to one side then the other so a moving highlight crosses the real finish. Shot 3: macro of the finish, closure or construction. Shot 4: cut to [SECOND COLOURWAY] only if a reference for it exists; keep framing and light identical. Shot 5: subject faces camera, product still visible, holding eye contact. Handheld with slight sway, real room light, no beauty retouching of the product surface. Preserve shape, colour, proportions and packaging exactly. Do not invent colourways, included accessories, prices or readable text.
The only shot allowed to breathe. Product still in frame.

Events
Brands whose differentiator is attitude, not spec
Evidence it needs
A product image, plus approved lifestyle or group references for every setting you cut to.
Where it breaks
Do not imply social outcomes, popularity or occasions that the product cannot support, and do not let the product morph between cuts.
Copy-ready prompt
Create a [DURATION]-second 9:16 lifestyle montage using [PRIMARY PRODUCT IMAGE] as the exact identity reference for [PRODUCT NAME]. Shot 1: upward tilt into open sky, product mark implied by the product itself entering at the end of the move — establish the world before the product. Then 6-9 hard cuts, each 0.6-1.5 seconds: product in hand, condensation or surface detail, a group of people mid-laugh, a wide of the setting, a close of the product against the light. Final shot: the group together, product visible in every hand, allowed to hold for the remaining duration. Saturated warm palette, sun flare acceptable, no slow motion. Preserve the submitted product exactly in every cut — same shape, colour and proportion, no morphing between shots. Do not imply social outcomes or occasions the product cannot support; do not generate readable text, logos overlaid on the footage, or prices.
A format is the shot-level skeleton of an ad — how many shots, how long each beat holds, what the camera is allowed to do, and what evidence the product needs to support it. It sits between a creative direction and a shot list.
How were these six formats derived?
We pulled 26 finished ecommerce ads from public creative libraries, detected every scene cut with ffmpeg, sampled the midpoint frame of each shot, and recorded camera, light, action and on-screen copy per shot.
Do these prompts produce text or logos on screen?
No. Captions, prices and end cards belong to the deterministic layout layer, where they can be edited, translated and versioned. Every prompt here asks the model to leave that space clean rather than hallucinate typography.
Can I use these formats with my own product photos?
Yes, provided the evidence each format lists actually exists for your product — a licensed presenter for testimonials, a real texture close-up for macro films, an in-context shot for scale. Without that evidence the format has to fall back to a simpler reveal.
Pick a format, then let the studio hold it.
Formats are the part most tools leave out: you get a text box and a hope. AdverForge turns a chosen format into a reviewable shot plan, checks your product photos can actually support it, and shows the credit cost before anything is generated.
